captioned by closed captioning services, inc. good morning, i'm carolyn tyler, thanks for joining us. let's start with a look at the weather with our meteorologist, frances dinglasan. good morning. another nice day. dealing with low clouds and fog once again. beautiful live shot from emeryville looking towards san francisco, low coastal clouds, we are starting off with temperatures in the 50s. even getting up into the 70s in some locations, especially by lunchtime mostly sunny for the interior areas. cloudy along the coast, pretty much all day today.

that's where you will find 60s even this afternoon. mid 80s in the interior valleys. by 7:00 this evening, mainly clear, still cloudy along the coast. we have a warm-up on its way. i'll have details coming up. thousands of runners are still in the streets of san francisco this morning as part of the annual san francisco marathon. even though the winners have already crossed the finish line. more than 8,000 are running or walking the full course of 26.2 miles. another 14,000 are said to be participating in one of two half marathons. three lanes of the golden gate bridge were closed until just a few minutes ago to allow the marathoners to safely cross the span. several city streets are still closed. the race began at 5:30 this morning with waves of runners after spreading across the golden gate bridge, the runners will go through golden gate park, past at&t

park before crossing the finish line at cupid's arrow near the ferry building. the men's winner of salt lake city with an unofficial time of two hours, 26 minutes and 45 seconds. the women's winner is a woman from san francisco who appears to have set a new course record with and you official time of two hours, 44 minutes and 10 seconds. our congratulations to them. developing news out of contra costa county. 2-year-old boy at children's hospital oakland this morning. after being mauled by his babysitter's pit bull in rodeo late last night. the boy was bitten in the head but should recover. officers with animal services arrived at the home on california street before midnight. the boy had already been taken to the hospital. a young woman answered the door and let officers inside. we now know they took that dog

into custody. the boy's family tells abc7 news they had no idea the babysitter even had a pit bull. contra costa county sheriff's investigators trying to piece together events that led to the shooting of 58-year-old girl and 22-year-old man at a west pittsburg home. both victims are recovering at local hospitals. a man got out of a car on franklin avenue, shot into the house then drove off. >> reporter: the little girl was rushed to the medical center with a gunshot wound to the leg her mother did not want to show her face on camera because she is worried for her family's safety. she doesn't know what happened because she wasn't home at time. how did you find bout what happened? >> they called me on the phone and said mikayla had been shot. i thought they were playing a prank. they were telling the true >> reporter: investigators don't have a lot of

information so far. they were called to the hospital after the 8-year-old girl arrived at the emergency room. witnesses have provided conflicting information. the second victim isn't giving much help either. >> we got a second call from kaiser walnut creek of a second gunshot wound victim, 22-year-old male. we sent a deputy to start investigation speaking with him, he was not completely cooperative. >> reporter: here's what investigators pieced together. someone drove up to the victim's in the 200 block of franklin in west pittsburg, stepped out of car and fired two shots at the house. deputies haven't found substantial evidence at that house. as for the 8-year-old girl she is recovering. she might have to have skin grafts? >> no, it is fine. >> reporter: in concord, sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> we now know the names of the two people killed in a

collision yesterday afternoon in san bruno. that accident happened after noon at the intersection of el camino real off the 380 exit. police say a driver smashed into cars stopped at the intersection. a 37-year-old of san francisco and a 39-year-old of san bruno died at the scene. three others were hospitalized. bart police are investigating a shooting at the san leandro bart station last night. someone fired shots at the building before 10:00 last night. fortunately, no one was injured. service was fully restored and the station reopened around midnight. investigators want to know if underaged drinking may have lead to a tragedy that killed a woman and sent another to the hospital after an accident on a south bay freeway. it happened on a party bus heading southbound along highway 17 in los gatos late friday night.

police say two women got into a fight on the bus on their way home to santa cruz from a concert. >> the door of the bus opened both passengers fell out of the bus. one got run over by the bus and she died at the scene. >> 25-year-old natasha nolan died at the scene. the other woman who is 20-years-old suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. this morning searchers in pacifica resume their search for a 76-year-old woman who suffers from dementia. maria jansen has not been seen since last wednesday afternoon. john alston talked with her husband he is worried sick about his lifelong partner where is she? the big question. >> reporter: he's talking about his wife of more than five decades, 76-year-old maria jansen they often walk

on the trails behind their home. wednesday afternoon he finished work on his computer when he noticed his wife was missing. >> she was not there. she was just not there. 2:00, she is sitting there and 4:00, she is not. she walked out, and so i thought maybe out in the backyard. >> reporter: all day saturday and the past several days hundreds have scoured the rough terrain in and around san pedro valley park, law enforcement from san mateo county and the bay area, volunteers on horseback, atv's and motorcycles. maria jansen is 5'5, 100 pounds last seen wearing yellow garden shoes and green pants. authorities say she suffers from dementia and memory loss. >> i'm extremely concerned about her well -- well-being she has been gone for three nights, she 76-years-old. >> reporter: searchers are concentrating on the park because that is often where she hikes with her husband or friend. because of her memory loss

police say she could have wandered some place different. >> we have a lot of people in the area, hikers, citizens, residents live in the area that might have seen her at certain locations. every time we get a tip we follow up. >> reporter: chris jansen wants information out hoping it leads to a miracle discovery. the past few days have been tough. >> not very good. this is -- we're married for 54 years. we know each other for 58 years. >> reporter: john alston, abc7 news. a wildfire that may have been intentionally set continues to burn east of ukiah this morning it broke out 1:30 yesterday afternoon near mill creek road in mendocino county. we have a viewer of ukiah who sent video. right now the fire is estimated at 400 acres and is 30% contained.

to the latest in the tragedy in colorado. tomorrow the suspect james holmes is scheduled to be back in court to face formal charges including 12 counts of murder and 58 counts of attempted murder. >> a woman critically injured in the shooting has suffered a miss . doctors say it was caused by the trauma, including the loss of her 6-year-old daughter in that shooting. yes, three of those who died were laid to rest. clayton sandell has the latest. advised of charges. >> reporter: suspect james holmes was a psychiatric patient while a grad student at the university of colorado. his psychiatrist, dr. fenton is the director of student mental health services. she didn't answer when they knocked. prosecution and defense teams are fighting over a notebook holmes made to fenton that may reveal clues about the massacre. holmes' public defender says it is confidential, between doctor and patient. fenton never received the notebook. experts say if holmes made specific threats she an obligation to report them. >> it is called a duty to warn or protect. >> reporter: there's always a chance holmes kept his alleged plan secret. >> it is possible the psychiatrist had very little information from james holmes at the time this happened. >> reporter: holmes will be back in court monday facing hundreds of charges, including 12 counts of first degree murder, 58 counts of attempted murder. two big questions:

will the prosecution seek the death penalty? and will he mount an insanity defense? other news, mitt romney is in israel today the second stop of his international tour. here is live video of the presumed republican presidential nominee speaking in jerusalem. he has already outlined how he would handle iran. david muir is traveling with romney and has the latest from jerusalem. >> reporter: mitt romney met with netanyahu earlier this morning. he is slated to have dinner later today. the two are longtime friends working together in the 70s. emerging from israel, tough talk on iran. foreign policy adviser with the romney campaign saying romney would respect and back an is -- israeli military strike against iran aimed at preventing nuclear capability.

in the world. voters wonder allowed whether mitt romney is ready for the world? i think the world is not yet ready for mitt romney. in an exclusive first interview former vice president cheney since his heart transplant in march, he describes the process of choosing a running mate. he says there's a long list that political friends easily make and a short list consisting only of those allies who are ready to assume the presidency. he says that one of course, tends to be a very short list. on my short list today, moderate weather. >> moderate weather, sunshine, even warmer temperatures in a few locations. dealing with fog and low clouds once again as we look live, light wind now over the ferry building, you see the flags blowing they will pick up this afternoon to 10 to 20 miles an hour from the west and southwest. i'll have temperatures and seven day forecast, coming up.

took part today. the winners crossed that line a long time ago, it took them just unthree hours to do so. -- under three hours to do so. great racing weather frances especially they started off at 5:30 this morning it was nice and cool. for those who are still straggling in, hats off to you at least you got out there. >> i'm just amazed people were out there five in the morning, running 26.2 miles. it was nice weather, overcast, low 50s is what they had to start off with, temperatures warming up into the low 60s during the celebration by the time it is overat 1:00. another live shot for you -- more grey skies now, things are going to change we are going to see a left sun, similar to yesterday's nice weather. so, here's a look at live doppler 7 hd, showing cloud cover, low clouds around the

bay area . in fact, widespread low clouds. a little sun in the interior valleys. so, we'll check out temperatures right now starting to reach the 60s even upper 60s in antioch. 68°, 54 still in san francisco, where we have a lot of folks running still and 59 in san jose. i wanted to mention there is fog out there and that has caused limit visibility in santa rosa, although it is up to two miles an hour, down to 3/4 of a mile earlier this morning, 1 1/2 mile visibility in half moon bay. for today, again you can expect the low clouds that means fog and coastal drizzle especially the morning hours. sunny and warmer today in some locations getting to near normal numbers hot inland midweek. we are a little below normal, above normal by wednesday, thursday forecast models

showing area of high pressure dominant feature bringing sunny skies. area of low pressure if that moves west it continues to bring in onshore flow that means cool by the coast with high pressure we'll see sunny conditions and so we'll see very warm temperatures midweek in the interior valleys even the coast will warm up a little, still in the 60s. here's a look at the forecast model, , a lot of low clouds even possible drizzle along -- along the peninsula coast. quickly by lunchtime it does clear back except for here, half moon bay as you head down highway 1. then it stays there all through the afternoon. that's why it is never going to warm up here. interior valleys 80s even upper 80s. look for 80 in san jose. 70 in any veil. 75 redwood -- in sunnyvale. 75 in redwood city, 66 downtown san francisco, partly sunny, if you are heading to the giants' game.

>> he's incredible. he got student of the month at school and everybody was beaming from the principal didn't. >> reporter: the couple not only adopted josh but adopted four other children because they were siblings and didn't want to break up the family. >> i think it helps that jenny and i come from large families. because we are used to the okay, it is chaos. >> reporter: they first became foster parents through a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging more people to become foster parents and improving the lives of foster children. there are nearly 60,000 children living in foster care in california. richard, alonzo and stephen know firsthand what it is like to need a place to call home. >> my parents weren't able to be there for me with when i was younger. in the foster system i

if you are a homeowner you are about to get something in the mail you might dread depending on where you live. your property tax bill for 2012 is going to arrive in september. here's michael finney with what you need to know if you plan to challenge your property tax assessment bill. >> reporter: he takes time to reflect as he waits for the city of san francisco to make a decision on his appeal of his property tax assessment. he's been waiting since last year for an answer. >> they said well it would be at least six more months before you hear about 2011. >> reporter: he appealed last

summer after the appraised value of his home came in $40,000 less than his tax base. >> i submitted in july 2011 and paid a nonrefundable $60 fee and didn't hear anything for a year >> reporter: chad's case is not unusual. the san francisco assessment appeal board says 75% of the more than 6,000 appeals already filed, still need to be scheduled. neither the san francisco appeal board, nor the assessor's office would agree to an on camera interview. the past president of the california assessor's association did talk to us. ron thompson is alameda county's tax assessor. he says the backlog in california started a few years back. >> it started to peak in 2009 and 10, now 11 they are down filing period for 2012 has just begun. >> reporter: the average wait for appeal hearing in the bay area is now one year. as home values begin to tumble

the number of challenges increase. in some counties, like san francisco, with the wait for a decision can be two years. that's the maximum allowed by law. >> i think some assessors, because of staffing levels and budget they've been afford are having somewhat more of a problem. >> reporter: for people like chad that means he will be getting his 2012 bill before knowing a decision on his 2011 an people the fee apply is $60, nonrefund . he doesn't understand why officials -- aren't pushing back the deadline to file appeals. >> you should apply for 2012 and pay another $60. i explained if i was declined for 2011 there wouldn't be any reason to apply for 2012. >> reporter: we have information on important deadlines. go to abc7news.com. i'm michael finney, 7 on your

mountain view. mid 50s for the most part around monterey. things change quickly once the low clouds clear that going to happen in the next few hours. starting off with fog and drizzle this morning. sunny and warmer today in some locations, close to normal. hot inland midweek we'll be above normal. here's why, this area of high pressure will move west. we have this area of low pressure and this air circulates a counterclockwise that will help onshore flow along the coast it will still be cool because of the sea breeze with high pressure building we'll see a warm-up midweek, especially in the interior locations. 9:00 still cloud cover with you see the areas of green, drizzle there, half moon bay, then notice how quickly things change by lunchtime, a lot of sunshine. then the clouds still here, in

the afternoon they don't quite clear so that's why it going to be cool here along highway 1 in santa cruz sunshine and also in around the monterey bay. 80 is your high today in san jose, 66 in san francisco, 72 in oakland. interior valleys upper 80s, 89 in antioch. morgan hill 84. 73 in santa cruz. also, last day of the garlic festival. if you are heading there, things will warm up, especially by lunchtime in the upper 70s and a lot of sunshine, pretty hot through the around hours mid 80s, then starting to be a little more comfortable mid 70s in the evening hours. if you are heading to the giants' game partly cloudy conditions expected. always a little sunnier the farther east you head, look for a hive 66°. -- look for a high of 66°.
